Coats Statement on President Obama’s Gun Control Proposals

January 17, 2013

01/18/13 Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) Wednesday issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s gun control proposals:

“The Newtown shooting was a horrific tragedy that had an impact on all Americans but especially every parent, teacher and student, and it is right for our country to reflect on how we can prevent such events in the future.

“As we learn more about the president’s proposals, we must protect Second Amendment rights and ensure the federal government does not punish responsible gun owners. I will not support legislation or executive actions that would affect gun ownership rights for law-abiding citizens, including any assault weapons ban.

“Laws alone cannot eliminate all acts of violence. As Americans we need to examine a culture that increasingly glamorizes violence and determine how we can better identify and address mental illness in our society.”

    Mr. Coats has it right!

Guns have been around for a very long time in our history, what separates today from yesterday is that there is a lot of gratutious gore in the movies, songs and pop culture.

However I believe a bigger threat is the paranoia that is driving people who would have not previously possessed a weapon that is perhaps not exactly cut out for having one.

Being armed isn’t just a right guaranteed by the constitution, but it carried a heavy responsibility. I am skeptical if many are up to the task of that responsibility.
