12/03/13 The Marshall County Commissioners have voted to amend the county ordinance to increase the bond for registered contractors.

The increase will be from $5,000 to $20,000 and will be effective at the beginning of the year.

The bond required of registered contractors in Marshall County is for the protection of homeowners if work performed does not meet code for safety. It does not cover any matters that may be addressed in civil litigation about completion of contracts and other such matters.

Marshall County Building Commissioner Chuck DeWitt had approached the Commissioners about raising the bond amount to provide more protection for property owners in the case of work that might not meet code specifications.

DeWitt told the Commissioners that the economic affect on contractors would be slight. He was told by three of the agencies that sell bonds that between $5,000 and $25,000 came at the same cost.

The Commissioners voted unanimously to raise the bond amount and the change will be in effect for the coming year.
