02/14/13 Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) released the following response to the President’s State of the Union address:

“House Republicans are ready to get to work on common sense reforms to reduce our deficit and wasteful government spending in this Congress.

“In Indiana, Hoosiers sit around their kitchen tables and make tough choices to keep a budget in their households, and they expect Congress to do the same.  For too long, there has been disconnect between Washington politics and common sense principles—and our families are paying the price.

“The formula to revitalizing this economy is not more government, more costly regulation, or higher taxes.  We’ve tried that approach.  It has yielded more debt, a stalled economy, and political gridlock.

“I will support a different equation: Congress must work together on a responsible, step-by-step approach.  Sequestration triggers devastating mandatory cuts: half from domestic programs and half from the military.  This is a reckless strategy, and must be replaced with common sense reforms.

“House Republicans have twice tried to pass an alternative to sequestration, with no response from the President or Washington Democrats.

“Across the board spending cuts will cause further damage to the economy and cost jobs for hard working Americans that we simply cannot afford.  It will devastate our military and their families.  As we address our fiscal issues in Washington, I am proud to bring Indiana’s Hoosier common sense to the equation.

“To yield success, we must do this together: step-by-step, responsibly, and to preserve the American dream.”
