CONGRESSWOMAN WALORSKI SUPPORTS BILL TO FREEZE FEDERAL SALARIES

January 22, 2013
By

01/23/13 As her first co-sponsored bill to reduce government spending, Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) Tuesday announced she will support legislation to freeze federal salaries, H.R. 273.  Sponsored by Representative DeSantis (FL-06), this bill prevents a salary increase for the Vice President, Cabinet Secretaries, Members of Congress, and federal employees issued through President Obama’s executive order in December.

“With our national debt at $16.4 trillion, authorizing a pay increase for the Vice President, Cabinet Secretaries, Members of Congress, and federal employees is simply unacceptable,” said Walorski.  “Congress must prove to the American people that we are serious about tightening our belt to reduce spending and live with our means.  Hoosier families consider keeping a budget a basic requirement, and the President should not be adding to the burdensome deficit on the backs of our children to benefit elected officials.”

If enacted, the proposed legislation could save an estimated $11 billion in spending over the next 10 years, and may be considered this week on the House floor.

The US Constitution forbids this type of legislation…

The 27th Amendment is clear: “No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.”

In other words, a pay change cannot take effect until the start of the next set of terms of office for Representatives.

Hopefully, Congresswoman Walorski will discover the 27th Amendment of the Constitution and point this out in the next GOP house caucus meeting…
