08/02/13 This Friday, Music in the Park will feature music with a Latin flavor. Orquesta Ritmo—a brass band with salsa extraordinaire.

Michael A. Eyia is not only the director but arranger, composer, sings lead vocals and plays guitar and percussion Born in Havana, Cuba, he started classical guitar lessons at 10. After leaving Cuba due to the unstable political climate, he immigrated to Lansing, MI. There he studied music at Michigan State University and Lansing Community College. As an instructor, he taught a variety of music courses over ten years. His passion for Cuban style music persisted and, in the late 1970’s, in preparation for the U.S. Bicentennial Celebration, he formed Orquesta Ritmo to introduce and educate people in a different style of Latin music. Listen to samples at their website at www.orquestaritmo.com.

To add to the ‘flavor’ of the evening, the Hispanic congregation of St. Michael’s Church will be offering tacos, burritos, tamales, sweet corn and fruit. A pineapple drink and a tasting treat called ‘Orchaeta’, a sweet rice drink, will add to the fun.  For those less adventurous, they will be serving brats and hot dogs.

All Music in the Park concerts are in beautiful Centennial Park in the Young Amphitheater at Baker and Randolph Streets. Due to construction, enter on Randolph. Bring a lawn chair, your favorite beverage and a picnic to enjoy this special event in a delightful setting.
