09/26/13 On Saturday, Sept. 28, Encore Performing Arts Music in the Park concert will feature music with a Latin flavor. Orquesta Ritmo—a brass band with salsa extraordinaire and Michigan’s premier salsa orchestra. This is the final event for the season, a rescheduling of the concert that was canceled August 2 due to stormy conditions. In the event of threatening weather for this concert, it will be moved to the Plymouth High School Auditorium. Prior to the performance,

Michael A. Eyia is not only the director but arranger, composer, sings lead vocals and plays guitar and percussion.  Born in Havana, Cuba, he started classical guitar lessons at ten. After leaving Cuba due to the unstable political climate, he immigrated to Lansing, MI. There he studied music at Michigan State University and Lansing Community College. As an instructor, he taught a variety of music courses over ten years. His passion for Cuban style music persisted and, in the late 1970’s, in preparation for the U.S. Bicentennial Celebration, he formed Orquesta Ritmo to introduce and educate people in a different style of Latin music. Listen to samples at their website at www.orquestaritmo.com.

All Music in the Park concerts are in beautiful Centennial Park in the Young Amphitheater at Baker and Randolph Streets. Bring a lawn chair, your favorite beverage and a picnic to enjoy this special event in a delightful setting. To add to the ‘flavor’ of the evening, Delta Theta Tau will be serving up homemade tamales, your choice of pork, chicken or veggie, as well as tacos. Prior to the concert, LifePlex Dance Academy will offer a taste of salsa moves at 6:15.

The Marshall County Community Foundation has partially funded the evening as well as the Indiana Arts Commission. Encore is grateful to Centier Bank, Gibson Foundation and U.S. Granules Corporation for sponsoring the Music in the Park Series throughout the season.
