11/21/13 It’s unclear if the students at the Union North Schools will have to make up the six days they missed due to a well malfunction at LaVille Junior-Senior High School. According to Dave Grenert, school board vice-president, they have requested a waiver from the state, but have not received a reply yet.

The only well malfunctioning of the three in the corporation was at the Junior-Senior High School. However, classes were cancelled at both LaVille Jr. /Sr. High School and LaVille Elementary School. Students missed Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays of the last two weeks, returning to school on Monday of this week.

Grenert said a motor in the well was replaced within one day two weeks ago, but the replacement motor failed and had to be replaced a second time. Students did return to school on the Monday after the first pump work was done, but were sent home early the next day when the motor failed a second time.

Once the motors were replaced, the schools had to remain closed until the water system could be flushed and water samples cleared by the state. Grenert said, “We (Union/North Schools) are unique since we are one of very few schools that have our own wells.” He added, “The wells are fine. The problems were on the mechanical side.”
