09/16/13 Morgan Uceny earned a much-needed victory Saturday when she captured a high-stakes one-mile road run at the Great North City Games in Newcastle, England.
The 2003 Plymouth High School graduate — a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team — clocked 4:33.97, surging away from a 13-runner field in the last 200 meters. It’s her first victory in a major race since winning the women’s 1,500-meter run at the Olympic Trials a year ago.
Uceny defeated several runners that she competed against at the London Olympics. Great Britain’s Laura Weightman finished second in 4:34.63.
It has been a rough year for Uceny, who has been on the comeback trail since falling with a lap to go in the Olympic 1500-meter final in August, 2012. She failed to make this year’s US team for the World Track & Field Championships, and was beaten badly in several European races over the summer.
But, after her big win over the weekend, she is hoping to end her season on a high note at the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City next Sunday.
