After the two week Christmas break, it was time to start off the 2013 portion of the season on a right note for Ryan Bales and his Plymouth Pilgrims. That they did, thanks to a 68-51 win over Elkart Memorial.
“It was a slow start for us I thought. We started gaping the game toward the end of the 2nd quarter but I still felt we were not in our stride. At halftime I challenged them to simply pick their play up. They responded.”, said PHS Head Coach Ryan Bales.
Plymouth finished shooting over 50% for a seventh time this season. Mack Mercer ended with his third Double-Double game of the season, scoring 31 points, racking up 12 rebounds in the process.
“Mack is answering the challenge before him. He has a target on his back. We talked about that during our break. We get better when he gets touches. Part of that is him getting to understand his positioning underneath and when we need him to step out.”, said Bales.
For a second time this season, Plymouth shot in the 80 percentile range from the free throw line (17/21).
“We have to continue taking advantage of free throw shooting opportunities. We are better than the 69% our stats show right now.”, added Bales.
“I thought we did about as good as job on Memorials leading scorer, Markese McGuire, as I’ve seen any of their opponents do on him. Keyser McCrammer seemed to make his life difficult on the court. But as great scorers do, they still find ways to score and he finished with a hard earned 21 points after being held to just 12 in the first half. So I was pleased with our defensive effort on him.”, said Bales.
Plymouth now faces Tippy Valley tonight at the Rock. WTCA Pre-Game starts around 7PM.
