03/08/13 State Representative Tim Harman (R- Bremen) congratulates Plymouth 6th grader Josie Edwards for receiving an award for the 2013 Indiana’s Agriculture Appreciation month essay contest. Josie received first place in the 4th-6th grade category. Students from across the state submitted essays on why and how agriculture impacts their lives daily, as well as the lives of those around them. Tuesday, Josie and other student winners were recognized at the Statehouse by Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann at the Ag Appreciation month luncheon.

“It was exciting to see Josie honored at the Statehouse,” said Rep. Harman. “She and all the other students did an excellent job highlighting the profound impact agriculture has on the lives of Hoosiers. Agriculture has a significant effect on every Hoosier in the state, and it is encouraging to see our schools putting an emphasis on that for young students.”

This special event kicked off the 2013 celebration of Indiana’s Agriculture Appreciation Month.  Sponsored by Indiana’s Family of Farmers and Indiana Humanities, this competition encouraged students to communicate what methods farmers use to feed families and animals while keeping soil nutrient-enriched.

More than 500 essays were submitted this year, of which six winners were chosen. Students were given the following prompts to use in writing their essays: “Describe how Indiana farmers nourish our families, our animals and our earth (soil),” and, “Please provide an example from each of the three areas.”

“When teachers and students are equally engaged in the learning process everyone wins,” said Rep. Harman. “The Annual Ag Essay is a great way for students to showcase and be proud of what they’ve learned and to be rewarded for all their hard work.”

The winning essays will be posted on www.indianafamilyoffarmers.com and www.indianahumanities.org
