06/21/13 More than just a fundraising event, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life offers our community a way to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember loved ones lost and fight back against a disease that takes too much for too many.
Key activities include opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. with the Cancer survivor’s Victory Lap immediately following. At 7 p.m. it’s the Colors of Cancer lap, at 8 p.m. the Fight Back Ceremony and the ever popular Mr. Relay at 9 p.m. The touching luminaire ceremony is at 10 p.m. and the fun continues through the night until closing ceremonies at 6 a.m. Sunday.
Visitors are encouraged and welcomed to stop by Centennial Park near the tennis courts and participate in the fund. There will be silent auctions, a bounce house, photo booth, dunk tank, live auction with a purpose, games, oral cancer screening and much more. Join in by purchasing and lighting a luminaria, pledging to save one life from cancer this year, or simply walking laps with friends.
More than 20 teams are expected with nearly 300 participants from Marshall County and the surrounding area. This is a rain or shine event.
Why are there Relay For Life events? One out of every two men and one out of every three women will face a cancer diagnosis in his or her lifetime. Money raised at the Relay For Life supports the American Cancer Society’s efforts to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and fighting back. Relay is the signature event and the nation’s largest grassroots movement. Since 1985, it has raised more than $4.25 billion to further the Society’s mission of eliminating cancer as a major health problem through research, education, advocacy and service.
