Shop With A Cop Preparing for this year’s Event

November 24, 2013

11/25/13 Plymouth FOP 195 is in full swing gathering donations for this year’s Shop With A Cop event.  For 17 or 18 years the FOP has been providing a bit of Christmas cheer to thousands of children in Marshall County.

Fundraising efforts vary from having jugs at dozens of merchants where customers are encouraged to drop in their loose change to

direct mail with nearly 800 letters being sent to past donors and

gathering cash donations from shoppers at Wal-Mart.

The largest fundraiser is the WTCA Shop With A Cop Radio Auction that will be held on Friday, December 6th starting at 8 a.m.  It’s estimated that more than 400 items will be on the auction block that day.  Those interested in donating items to the auction can do so by dropping them off at WTCA, 112 West Washington Street or calling WTCA at 936-4096 for pick-up.  If you are interested in bidding during the day long auction you can call the radio station (936-4096) now to get your bid number.

Founder of the local program and president of FOP 195, Hurshel Hunter said, “In the first year, Shop With A Cop was able to help 25 kids.  Last year more than 370 children went shopping although nearly 800 children sought assistance through the program.”  Children selected to participate in the program are provided breakfast the morning of the shop by members of the local Masons and then go shopping with police officers and other emergency service members from department around the county at Wal-Mart.

The program serves every community in the county.  Applications are available from the guidance counselors at the school, at the Boys and Girls Club of Marshall County and at WTCA. Completed applications must be returned by Friday, December 6th for consideration. Children are chosen based on need by a committee of community members outside of FOP members.
