12/16/13 ‘Tis the season for year-end giving. Charitable donations not only provide you with a feeling of personal satisfaction, but are also a great way to benefit from tax savings. It’s the holiday gift that requires no shopping, shipping, or even wrapping, and allows you to do something more for the greater good of your community.

Most people already know that United Way of Marshall County and local nonprofit organizations improve lives, strengthen our community and the economy, and lighten the burdens of government, taxpayers, and society as a whole. Charitable giving is critical to building a quality of life in Marshall County that can be enjoyed for many generations to come.

December is often when concerns about charitable deductions may surface. Most people give from their heart and not because of the tax deductibility of the gift. However, this benefit is something all take advantage of regardless of intent. If you are considering giving, then today is the day to act!

The United Way of the Marshall County provides local agencies critical financial support. Today more than ever before, your financial gifts are needed. Please consider making your annual contribution to the 2013 United Way Campaign before December 31, 2013. Or, if you have already given a gift, you may want to consider other options too.

You may choose to give to the United Way of Marshall County Endowment fund through the Marshall County Community Foundation. As an added benefit, until  Tuesday, December 31, your gift qualifies for a 10% match helping your dollars go even farther. Call 574.936.3366 for more information or go online to http://marshallcountycf.org/donations/ and type United Way of Marshall County).

You may want to consider giving a tribute gift in memory of or to honor a family member or friend. Or perhaps you are considering opening a charitable gift annuity. Please consult your financial advisor to learn about the benefits of making contributions through an IRA Charitable Rollover or giving appreciated assets or selling depreciated stock first and giving proceeds and deducting loss.

United Way of Marshall County recommends you consult with your financial advisor before making these types of gifts and to learn how charitable contributions might help reduce the taxes you will pay.

Contributions are only tax deductible in the year made, so be sure and submit your contributions by Tuesday, December 31, 2013.  Any donation charged to a credit card before the end of 2013, qualifies for tax benefits.  Checks are eligible for 2013, as long as they are dated and post-marked by December 31, 2013.

The United Way of Marshall County is located at 2701 North Michigan Street in Plymouth, and is open, Monday-Friday, 8:30AM-4:30PM.
