01/17/13 Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) released the following statement regarding President Obama’s gun control proposals:

“As a supporter of the Second Amendment, it is critical that lawmakers continue to protect the right to bear arms for responsible Americans, and I do not support the overwhelming executive actions in the President’s plan that could violate the gun ownership rights of law abiding citizens.

“Congress must pursue a step-by-step bipartisan approach to improve relevant issues—particularly better access to mental health care—instead of forcing gun restrictions.  Enactment of future legislation must strike a balance to protect the rights of responsible Americans, while keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill and those who intend to cause harm to others.

“As the wife of a schoolteacher, the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary truly hits home for our family.  Moving forward, I will work together with law enforcement and school officials to identify a better approach to ensure our children and communities are safe from further acts of senseless violence.”
