Donnelly statement supports Ukraine

March 28, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After returning from a bipartisan delegation to Ukraine earlier this week, Senator Joe Donnelly voted today to provide aid to Ukraine and impose sanctions against Russia. The bill passed the Senate by bipartisan voice vote and now goes to the House.

Donnelly said, “Russia has blatantly violated another country’s sovereignty—a clear disregard for the rule of law—and that is why I supported legislation that would impose sanctions on Russia while supporting Ukraine. When I was in Ukraine, everyone from government leaders to everyday citizens expressed serious concern about Russia’s illegal invasion and annexation of Crimea, and today we are sending a strong message that we are punishing Russia for its actions and will continue to stand with the people of Ukraine.”

On Sunday, Donnelly, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, met with Ukrainian government leaders and spoke with everyday citizens in Kiev.
