Andrea Schoof, program director of the Boys & Girls Club of Marshall County gave an interesting presentation at the last meeting of the Plymouth Lions Club. She explained the many different aspects and projects they offer and one interesting highlight was the SeaPerch which is an underwater robotics program for students that teaches basic engineering and science concepts through hands-on-activities. During the program, students build an underwater ROV (remotely operated vehicle) which is shown in the picture and are able to test the ROV in the water in an obstacle course setting. This year, they added an underwater camera that is connected to a monitor which allows them to have a better view of the obstacle course. They used the camera in the Yellow River to observe the wildlife in the water. Students also learned about submarines through a simple, hands-on-activity and how they operate in the water.
The Boys & Girls Club offers a safe place to learn and grow; ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals…life-enhancing programs and character development experiences…hope and opportunity. Their Mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
Also on hand for the evening at the Plymouth Lions Club was Samantha the Therapy Dog. Samantha is a TDI certified black Newfoundland dog who visits at Memorial Hospital, Michiana Hematology-Oncology P.C., and St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
