With slight apprehensive the Marshall County Commissioners appointed two new positions at the County Highway Department during their meeting Monday morning.
Commissioner Deb Griewank took the lead and made a motion to appoint Laurie Baker as the Administrative Manager and Jason Peters as the Supervisor of County Highways.
Baker is currently the court administrator for Judge Dean Colvin in Superior Court II. She will take her new position on July 28th.
Peters has been the Highway General Forman since Haeck retired from the county.
Griewank noted that the Superintendent’s position and the General Forman slot will remain in the budget but will be unfunded. The positions remain so if the commissioners would decide to go back, they wouldn’t need to bring the position to the personnel committee or to the County’s Human resources consultant.
Griewank motioned to appoint the two new positions. Commissioner Jack Roose clarified that the foreman position wouldn’t be filled but the position that Peters had driving a truck would be filled. He noted the need to hire more people.
Commissioner Kevin Overmyer noted that a couple of new hires are needed in the department especially with the county taking over the four-lanes of US 31 this fall.
Commissioner Roose said, “I’ll just say, I have been a little skeptical of having two people out there. I’ll take the blame for not thinking maybe this isn’t the way to go but I understand the delegation of responsibilities moving forward. I believe in Laurie’s abilities and will second the nomination.
The motion passed unanimously.
