WDA_BloodDrive_1stGradeThis fall first grade Students at Washington Discovery have been learning about the body’s skeletal and circulatory systems. Students have learned the importance of white blood cells and the American Red Cross.

WDA_BloodDrive_AndyHartleyWDA Principal, Andy Hartley, said the school usually doesn’t repeat projects from year to year; but the blood drive last year was a great success. Hartley said, “It was the largest turnout in Marshall County.” Hartley said, “This is a great opportunity for our kids to understand and be excited about community service.” This program teaches children about blood donation, blood components and how blood is used as medicine.

WDA_BloodDrive_armOn Thursday, November 20 a Pint-Size Hero Blood Drive was held at the school and was a huge success. Hartley said the kids are “great recruiters“. They were able to reach their goal of 100 donors.

The four – first grade classrooms at Washington Discovery Academy were in charge of making the blood drive happen. Last year the school’s goal was to find 75 donors. This year Mr. Hartley raised the goal to 100 and now that they reached the goal they will soon be rewarded by having a school-wide superhero costume day and next Tuesday afternoon Mr. Hartley will indeed grant the student’s request to kiss a pig!
