01/03/14 Fifteen year old Heather Borggren is a sophomore at the Weidner School of Inquiry in Plymouth High School. A very active and outgoing person, Heather loves going on new adventures and experiencing fun and exciting things.
Borggren has been invited to participate in the People to People program. People to People was introduced in 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower wanted to bridge cultural and political borders through education and exchange, creating global citizens and creating a better place for future generations. For the past 53 years People to People has allowed over 1 million students and teachers to travel overseas to 6 different continents.
Heather Borggren is going because she wants to connect with other cultures and gain the independence only traveling can bring. She also enjoys learning about the history of countries and felt this would be a perfect opportunity for her to do so. Borggren said, “It also will give me an advantage for applying for colleges. Overall, it will be a learning experience and I think I’ll come back as a different person.”
The PHS sophomore will be visiting seven different countries in Europe including England, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, and Switzerland. The 20 day trip begins on July 5th and Heather is raising 100% of the funds for the trip on her own. Total cost of the trip is $7,000.
Heather is earning the necessary funds through donations of community members, friends and family, and through different fundraisers such as the Dining-To-Donate at Applebee’s. Dining-To-Donate is a fundraiser that Applebee’s does to help do their part in giving back to the community. What you do is present a flyer on January 6, 7, or 8 which are next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 15% of your bill will be donated to Heather’s People to People trip and the diner will get a $5 off coupon for their next visit. So not only do you help me, but you also don’t have to cook for a meal, and get a coupon. This is at the Plymouth Applebee’s.
