Local NewsSeveral suggestions and concerns were brought up during the Marshall County Safety Committee meeting this week.
County school superintendents, representatives from police agencies, the county EMA director, representatives from the state and county highways and several others attended the meeting.
Donna Burroughs, Superintendent of the Triton Schools asked the INDOT representative about a flashing yellow light at State Road 331 and Liberty Street in Bourbon. Burroughs said they asked for the light 15 months ago and were told it was a go but nothing has happened to this point. She explained, “We are the only school without crossing guards.” INDOT said they would work with her to get a solution.
Culver Community School Superintendent Vicki Mcguire had a question on bomb threat policies. She suggested a work session of school officials so a review of all policies could be conducted and they could work toward similar policies so in a situation, emergency responders would have a good idea of how the schools are handling the threat. Mcguire also asked superintendents about allowing their local police agencies full access to the video surveillance in the school. The group decided these two subjects would be good for a work session.
County EMA Director Clyde Avery shared his concern of emergency weather situations during sporting events. Avery said he attended two sporting events this summer when officials did not take the correct action once thunder and lightening was heard and seen. He urged superintendents to know weather conditions and react when necessary. Avery reminded them that if you can see lightening or hear thunder athletes should clear the field and fans should be removed from bleachers and all should be directed to a safe location until the weather clears. IHSAA rules require the suspension of the activity for at least 30 minutes after following the last flash of lightening.
