05/19/14 Washington, D.C. – Senators Joe Donnelly and Dan Coats today gave an update regarding the process for filling the upcoming vacancy on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.  Earlier this year, Judge Sarah Evans Barker announced her intention to take senior status effective June 30, 2014.

Donnelly said, “I thank all Hoosiers who completed the application for the upcoming vacancy on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.  I once again thank Judge Sarah Evans Barker for her thirty years of service on the District Court.  I look forward to working with Senator Coats as we begin the process of reviewing candidates’ applications.”

Coats said, “I appreciate the Hoosiers who have applied for this important position. Federal judges play a crucial role in our judicial system and are appointed for life, so all applicants deserve careful consideration. My focus is on reviewing these applications.”

Interested candidates were encouraged to apply via Donnelly’s website by submitting an application highlighting their qualifications for the position.  Applications were due no later than 5 PM EDT on Monday, May 12, 2014.  Fourteen Hoosiers submitted applications.

The applicants bring a broad range of experience from across the legal profession. The applicants have been litigators, held judicial office, taught law school courses, and advised companies on their business operations. Applicants have also held positions as prosecutors, public defenders, and with other government agencies.
