02/04/14 Dr. Tony McPherron, a 1986 graduate of Plymouth High School was honored Friday evening during the boys’ basketball games with the PHS Service Award. While a student at PHS, Tony played on the football team and was a manager and student trainer for the basketball and baseball teams.
After earning his undergraduate degree from Indiana State University with a degree in athletic training and sports sciences in 1990 he attended medical school and earned his doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine in 1994 from Ohio University. In 2000 Dr. McPherron returned to Plymouth and became the PHS team orthopedic surgeon after completing his residency in Toledo and fellowship at Florida Orthopedic Institute in Tampa.
During the 2006-2007 athletic season, Dr. McPherron became the assistant gymnastics coach and eventually became the head coach from 2010-2013. During his tenure with the gymnastics team, they qualified for the regional two years and were ranked as one of the top 20 teams in the state.
This past fall, Tony left Plymouth to become the orthopedic surgeon for Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, VA. At Virginia Tech, he serves as the orthopedic surgeon for the 18 varsity sports teams and teaches orthopedic surgery for medical student, residents and the primary care sports medicine fellowship.
