03/12/14 Firefighters and fire apparatus from 12 departments responded to 14,500 5C Road, the deeded property of Mary Jo and Stanley Kaser at 3:26 Tuesday afternoon for a structure fire.

A two story house on the north side of 5C Road was totally engulfed in flames with thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

Three family members were at home at the time of the fire and bystanders and one county officer assisted in getting an elderly woman out of the house.  Two of the residents were transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend and one resident was taken to Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.  The county officer was also taken to the Plymouth hospital to be checked out.  The residents all suffered from smoke inhalation.

Because this is a rural fire, tankers trucks transported water from the Plymouth Air port and from Showland Cinema to the blaze for nearly three hours.  The home was totally destroyed with an entire collapse of the structure.

Because of the extreme nature of the blaze, and the injuries sustained a representative from the State Fire Marshall’s office will assist LaPaz with their investigation determining the cause of the fire.  The rubble will be excavated out on Wednesday .

Fire crews were on the scene late into the evening.
