With the best weather of the spring the Plymouth Varsity won the first annual Plymouth Match Play Tournament at Plymouth Country Club on Saturday afternoon.

Plymouth won 3-2 in match #1 over Fort Wayne Canterbury, 3-2 over in match #2 Laporte, and 5-0 over South Bend Riley in match #3.

Senior Nate Kolter, Junior Reis Yoder, and Freshmen Micah Calhoun all had great days each going undefeated (3-0).

Reis Yoder didn’t loose a hole in his first match with Canterbury.  It wasn’t till four holes in on his second match vs Laporte that Reis surrendered a hole.  Most impressive was Reis’s points on the day.  Out of a possible 27 points Reis dominated earning 20.5 garnering him the overall points medal on the day.

Nate Kolter made fairly easy work of this competition wining all three of his matches 3 & 2.  Nate was also impressive earning 19 points.  Nate’s 3-0 record earned him the #1 lineup position medal.  Micah Calhoun was solid all day winning his first and last matches 3 & 2; second match 2up.  Micah earned 19 points on the day.  Micah’s 3-0 record earned him the #5 lineup position medal.  Both Ben Schenk and Zach Craft had tight back and forth matches all day long.  Both players dropped their first two matches before rallying in the third match to defeat their competitor from Riley.

Schenk finished with 13 points while Craft earned 14.5 points. The tournament is the first of its kind since the IHSAA allowed match play in 2013.  Play was conducted in foursomes with schools playing head to head across three – nine hole – matches.  Each player walked 27 holes.  Remarkably at the conclusion of each 9 hole match no matches we’re halved, all we’re decided within the 9 holes.

Points were earned by each individual each hole towards an aggregate total for the entire event.  Points we’re used to break ties in the event of a match being halved and or ties needing broken.  The player with the highest aggregate points at the conclusion received a medal (Reis Yoder today).

A medal was also awarded to the individual with the best match play record in the head to head matches at each of the five lineup positions.  A team trophy was also awarded to the school with the best match play record on the day.On the season the Plymouth Varsity is now 11-1.  The next match is back at PCC on Wednesday vs Northridge and Concord.  This match opens up NLC round robin play.

Also on Saturday our JV competed in the Warsaw Invitational at Rozella Ford shooting 369.  Team placing is pending results from Warsaw.
