Miller's_LegoRiverside Project Based Learning student, Makayla Wilson shared her knowledge and love of LEGO’s with the residents at Miller’s Assisted Living, Tuesday afternoon December 30th.   Wilson enjoys creating different objects with her LEGO’s and she has entered projects made with LEGO’s in 4-H.

The history of the snap- together-blocks begins in 1932 when Ole Kirk Kristiansen created the first wooden LEGO’s.  Ownership of the company has been passed down from generation to generation.  LEGO’s are not just for children.  The age range includes toddlers through adults.   LEGO’s are also more than just a toy.  They are used to inspire young people to consider a career in engineering and architecture.

Wilson told about the many different LEGOS kits available such as:  Disney, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Ninja Turtles, and many more.  The kits can run from $15.00 up into the hundreds of dollars.  She receives most of her kits as birthday and Christmas gifts.   An interesting tid-bit of information Wilson shared was that each individual LEGO piece in each kit is marked with an identifying number in case it is lost and would have to be replaced.  The most important thing to know about putting a kit together is to follow the instructions.

Wilson enjoys freely creating LEGO objects and after her presentation she passed out the small blocks and allowed the residents to try their hand at creating.  The group spent the remainder of the afternoon making houses, vehicles and other objects with the help of Wilson and her mother and sister.
