Metronet Project Causes Gas Leak on Oak Hill

July 16, 2014

GasLeak_OakHIll_1A crew working on the installation of conduit for the Metronet project hit another gas line Tuesday morning.

GasLeak_OakHill_2A second crew hired by Michiana Contracting hit a gas line on Oak Hill Avenue Tuesday morning about 9:30.

GasLeak_OakHill_3Fire Chief Rod Miller said gas had to be shut off to approximately 10 homes in the area of Oak Hill and Lincoln Street. Just before noon the leak was capped but crews were still working on the issue and had Oak Hill closed to traffic at 10 p.m.

    Hi Andrew,

From what I’ve seen when you ask where the lines are they send a crew out with a detector to physically locate them. The number of flags in those pictures seems to indicate this is what happened so it is probably operator buffoonery.

I know this is kind of a dumb question, but does this company call NIPSCO to find out where these lines are before such work begins? If they do, this somehow doesn’t make a lot of sense, unless the locations of the lines are so far away from where they are on the drawings — especially for this being the second case.
