PHS Students Compete at ASCE Purdue University Bridge Bust Competition

March 5, 2014

03/6/14 On February 28, 2014, Plymouth High School entered 9 bridges at the annual ASCE Purdue University Bridge Bust Competition.  There were 12 other schools participating with a total of 80 bridges.  Students had to design a bridge based on the criteria given to them by Purdue and then build the bridge out of balsa wood.  The bridges were judged on aesthetics and Structural Efficiency (load of bridge / weight of bridge).  Bridges weighed between 1.5 to 2.5 ounces and even though they were light weight, they were able to hold between 30 and 60 pounds of weight before they broke.  We had several students who did an outstanding job on their bridges.

Melanie Cooper and Zacc Hutchings earned the only perfect score (15/15) for Aesthetics and won 1st place.  They also placed 2nd in Structural Efficiency.  This is a repeat for them as they placed 2nd last year as well.

Emily Denney and Makayla DePoy just missed 3rd place finishing in 4th for Structural Efficiency.

Sarah Iwinski and Sommer McClellan placed 7th in Structural Efficiency.

Garrett Fox placed 10th in Structural Efficiency and Makayla Fox placed 14th.
