03/10/14 (Rochester) Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a snowmobile accident which occurred on Lake Manitou Sunday at approximately 1:00am. Jonathan C. Haussmann, 32, of Rochester suffered a dislocated hip as a result of the accident. Haussmann was wearing a helmet which likely minimized his injuries greatly.

Haussmann was operating his snowmobile on Lake Manitou near the small island when he turned sharply at a high rate of speed to avoid the island which caused him to be thrown from the snowmobile. The snowmobile then flipped several times causing moderate damage to the snowmobile.

Haussmann was transported to Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester for treatment of his injuries. Officers believe alcohol and excessive speed were contributing factors to this accident. Lead investigating Conservation Officer Cpl. Ashlee Jackson forwarded his report to the Fulton County prosecutors’ office for review.

Indiana Conservation Officers want to remind operators of all terrain vehicles (ATVs) that it is unlawful to operate an ATV such as snowmobiles and four wheelers while under the influence of alcohol. Helmets should also be worn at all times when operating an ATV whether on public or private lands. Always ride with a partner whenever possible just in case an accident should happen, there will be someone able to go for help immediately.
