PLYMOUTH – St. Joseph Regional Medical Center broke ground Friday for a $9 million investment in emergency services for Marshall County and the surrounding area.
Calling it “…More than an expansion of an emergency room, rather an investment in the county and a service to the community…” President and CNO of St. Joe Med Center in Plymouth, Loretta Schmidt joined St. Joe President and CEO Al Gutierrez and Board of Trustees President John Zeglis in ceremonies breaking ground for the expansion of the facility that will bring state of the art emergency care to the area.
Zeglis said that the investment was a vote of confidence in the county but one that he felt was deserved by the Plymouth campus of St. Joe Regional – stating that it is “…already a great hospital and about to be greater.”
The new Emergency Department will increase capacity by more than 60 percent, streamline emergency care and increase patient safety and privacy. The new Emergency Department will feature a larger waiting area with a dedicated children’s play area.
Care will not be disrupted during construction. Once the new construction is completed, the original space will be repurposed to support Emergency Department administration, diagnostic imaging and other hospital services. The total project is scheduled to be completed by September 2015 at a cost of $9 million.
MPA Architects, of South Bend, has been selected to design the new space. Construction will begin in June.
