The Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) oncology program in Mishawaka has been awarded the 2013 Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC).

The OAA, established in 2004, recognizes oncology programs that strive for excellence in providing the best quality care for patients. Less than 75 oncology programs in the United States received the OAA recognition.

“We strive to not only meet the national standard of care, but to exceed it every day,” said Steve Anderson, MD, SJRMC Chief Medical Officer. “We have a calling to care for our community and create a superior experience for our patients during the most significant moments of their lives.”

SJRMC underwent a comprehensive evaluation by a physician surveyor where the oncology staff had to demonstrate a commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent the full scope of the program and receive a compliance rating for another 27 standards.

The seven standards that form the basis of the OAA criteria are taken from the following areas of program activity:

·       Cancer committee leadership

·       Cancer data management

·       Cancer conferences

·       Clinical management

·       Quality improvement

The oncology program at SJRMC was recently recognized by the American College of Surgeons CoC after it renewed its three-year accreditation with commendation and received a Gold Award rating.
