The Indiana Department of Education released local passage data for the Spring 2014 administration of the IREAD 3 assessment Tuesday.  Earlier this month, the Department released statewide results that showed a passage rate of 85.58%, up from 85.28% for the same period last year.

The purpose of the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination (IREAD-3) assessment is to measure foundational reading standards through grade three. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with Public Law 109 in 2010.  This requires the evaluation of reading skills for students who are in the third grade each Spring to ensure that all students can read proficiently before moving on to grade four.

Plymouth Schools faired will in the testing with Menominee Elementary having the highest score.  There were 71 third graders that took the test and 66 passed with the passing percentage being 93%.  The other elementary schools in the Plymouth Community School Corporation were Webster School where 56 were tested and 51 passed making the passing percentage 91.1%.   Jefferson School had 65 students testing and 55 passed for an 84.6 percent passing rate.   Washington Discovery Academy tested 66 third graders and 52 passed for a percentage of 78.8% passing.

Superintendent Dan Tyree from the Plymouth School Corp. said, “We always feel that we can do better. Our lowest score was a team of all brand new teachers to third grade. That team will get better once they understand the process and the testing. Other than that our scores were pretty typical, but like I said before, we can always get better because our teachers will do whatever it takes to make sure all students know how to read.”

Results of the other schools in the county were Triton Elementary who tested 64 and passed 63 for a 98.4 % pass rate.   Culver Elementary gave the test to 76 third graders and 66 passed for an 86.8% rate.  41 Argos third graders took the IREAD 3 test and 37 passed for a passing rate of 90.2% rate while Bremen third graders tested 91 and passed 84 for a 92.3 percentage passing rate.
