The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces several changing traffic patterns beginning next week on the south side of South Bend, including lane restrictions, a road closure, and the opening of a new bridge and roadway. It is all part of the new U.S. 31 project, as crews work to tie-in the lanes of the new U.S. 31 over the coming months. All restrictions and openings below are scheduled to take place by the end of the day Monday, May 5.
RESTRICTIONS – Monday, May 5th:
– U.S. 31 will be down to one lane in each direction, between Kern Road and the U.S. 20 Bypass interchange, through most of the summer. INDOT is working to alleviate any traffic delays and congestion by adjusting traffic signals in the area to facilitate north-south traffic flow.
– Johnson Road will be closed permanently at U.S. 31, between Main Street and S. St. Joseph Street, as crews work to build a new Johnson Road bridge which will allow traffic to travel over the new U.S. 31 upon completion of the project.
NEWLY OPEN TO TRAFFIC – Monday, May 5th:
– The Jackson Road bridge opens, which will allow traffic to travel over existing U.S. 31, just south of the U.S. 20 Bypass.
– Main Street opens, between U.S. 31 and Jackson Road.
AVOID DELAYS
– Despite signal adjustments, traffic volume in the area may lead to back-ups on U.S. 31, between Kern Road and Ireland Road, and back-ups on the U.S. 20 Bypass exit ramp for traffic accessing southbound U.S. 31. Drivers are encouraged to find alternative routes to avoid delays.
– Residents in surrounding neighborhoods are encouraged to avoid U.S. 31 delays by using the newly open Main Street and Jackson Road bridge, as well as the Fellows Street bridge over the U.S. 20 Bypass, which opened last fall.
