By 2016, forecasts predict there will be over 11,000 middle skill advanced manufacturing and logistics job openings in Indiana. These are jobs that require more than a high school diploma, but less than a four-year degree. However, middle skills doesn’t mean middle wage. Advanced manufacturing and logistics jobs pay 40% and 30% higher than the state average respectively.
That’s why Plymouth High School is offering a set of advanced manufacturing and logistics courses that use The Hire Technology curriculum for the 2015-2016 school year.
Hire Technology is a curriculum developed in partnership with Indiana companies for Indiana students, because today’s advanced manufacturing and logistics careers require high-tech skills and knowledge.
Students completing Hire Technology can earn up to 15 dual college credits and five industry-recognized certificates, equipping them to enter the workforce with demonstrated knowledge and marketable skills upon graduation.
Hire Technology is used in Plymouth High School’s Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing & Logistics class and Advanced Manufacturing 1.
Recently a group of Plymouth Community School Corporation administrators and teachers attended a seminar held at Ingram Micro down state in Plainfield to learn more about Hire Technology. Principal Jim Condon and PHS’s Project Lead the Way Teacher Rich Schieber are excited to extend Hire Technology offerings at PHS.
Hire Technology was developed by Conexus Indiana and Ivy Tech Community College and has been rolled out in coordination with the Indiana Department of Education. It is available to nearly 2,000 students around the state. Plymouth High School will begin offering the program in the 2015-2016 school year and it will provide students hands-on learning experiences throughout the school year.
The two classes PHS will offer to students are Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics and Advanced Manufacturing 1.
Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics
Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics introduces students to the technology, skills, and knowledge needed in today’s modern, high-tech, advanced manufacturing and logistics environments. Using the Hire Technology curriculum, which was developed by Indiana industry members, students will gain a working knowledge of safety, quality, and production processes, and will apply their new skills and knowledge in classroom projects. Emphasis is placed on understanding manufacturing and logistics processes as a whole. In addition, students will gain a basic understanding of computer-numerical control devices, electrical skills, operations processes, inventory principles, and basic business principles. Students have the opportunity to develop the characteristics employers seek, earn nationally recognized industry certificates, and get college credit.
Advanced Manufacturing I (5608)
Advanced Manufacturing I prepares students for careers in Indiana’s largest industry: Advanced Manufacturing. Advanced Manufacturing I uses Indiana’s industry-driven Hire Technology curriculum, which features online instruction, virtual simulators, and classroom projects. Students will build on the basic concepts and skills covered in Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics. Advanced Manufacturing I offers an in-depth look at electronics, schematics, programmable controllers, and robotics. Key manufacturing processes and principles, such as quality, safety, continuous improvement, and lean manufacturing are also woven into the class. Students in the course will apply what they’ve learned and work directly with members of industry, tackling projects, learning how the business works, and building relationships. Along the way, students will have the opportunity to earn college credit and industry certificates.
