County News_logoThe 2014 Annual Report for the Marshall County Health Department was presented to board members this week.

Dean Schmidlapp, the county’s only full time environmentalist reported on the Food Sanitation Program and funding for this position is supplemented by the State of Indiana through Local Health Maintenance.

There are approximately 230 retail food establishments which receive timely inspections to monitor their compliance with public health laws.  Routine inspections are also performed at various festivals, auctions, and mass gatherings.

Schmidlapp explained that foodborne illness investigations and consumer complaints are conducted as needed with support from the Indiana State Department of Health.

The 2014 annual report shows a total of 457 establishment inspections conducted.   342 permits were issued and 27 other food service permits issued without a fee. The total permit licensing fees were $27,850.

Last year Schmidlapp investigated 5 food borne illnesses complaints and 19 food complaints.
