DONALDSON, INDIANA – The Ancilla College softball team picked up a much-needed sweep over Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference leader Kellogg Community College by scores of 2-1 and 3-2.
The host Chargers used a two run fifth inning to open up the scoring for the game. Madyson Price led off the inning with a solo home run. Mariah Miller followed with a single, moved to second on a walk by Brooke Stout, scurried to third on a wild pitch, and scored two outs later on a single by Abbey Renner. Renner struck out six in the complete game victory, allowing four hits, including a solo home run in the sixth, to earn the victory.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair. Kellogg (31-10, 24-4 MCCAA) led off the scoring with one run in the first. Ancilla tied the game in the fourth. Morgan Peoni led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Brittany Probasco sacrifice bunt. After moving to third on a wild pitch, a Renner sacrifice fly scored Peoni.
The Chargers took the lead at 2-1 with a run in the fifth inning. Price reached base on a single and moved to second on a Mariah Miller sacrifice bunt in which the Bruins attempted to force Price at second unsuccessfully. One out later, a single from Allena McElfresh plated Price.
Kellogg bounced right back to tie the game with a solo home run in the sixth, but Ancilla picked up their third run of the game and retook the lead for good with a solo home run from Renner in the bottom of the sixth. Renner picked up the complete game victory, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three.
Ancilla (16-19, 9-13) hosts Kalamazoo Valley Community College (26-8, 19-5 MCCAA) on Friday, April 24 and Grand Rapids Community College (10-26, 9-17 MCCAA) on Saturday, April 25Friday’s game begins at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday’s game begins at 1:00 p.m. with Sophomore Day activities starting around 12:30 p.m.
