Bremen_PoliceThe Bremen Police Department again is experiencing a major safety hazard mainly effecting children. During the Bremen Public Schools pick up and drop off times of students.

Police Chief Matt Hassel said, “Some motorists are stopping in the middle of the road to load and unload passengers. At the same time other motorists that are pulling to the curb, as prescribed by law, to load and unload passengers.   When they are pulling from the curb to the travel portion of the roadway there are children crossing the road in front of them making it extremely dangerous.”

Hassel said they have experienced this problem before and have issued many warnings, advertised and have had the school put a notice out about the problem.

The Town of Bremen has an ordinance, 61.71 which states “A person may not obstruct vehicular or pedestrian traffic by stopping, standing, parking or leaving an attended or unattended vehicle on the paved or main traveled part of a highway, sidewalk, or any other public right of way within the Town”.   Violation of this ordinance could cause a fine of up to $100.00 being issued to the violator.

The Bremen Police Department will be increasing its enforcement of this ordinance around the Bremen school in an attempt to enhance the safety of the children and other pedestrians. All motorists are encouraged to pull within 10″ of the curb of the road to load and unload passengers.
