MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Tough going the first two days turned in to smooth sailing – at least for one day – as Ancilla’s Chargers took a double win taking a morning game from Montgomery Community College 11-2 and avenging a defeat from a day earlier taking a 5-1 win over Mohawk Valley Community College.
“It was a good day,” said Ancilla head coach Joe Yonto. “I feel we played as consistently as we should be at this point. It was great to come back and beat a team that beat us handily yesterday. I think that showed something.
“The team played some great baseball today in all the aspects of the game – pitching, defense and timely hitting.”
A morning game at Pelican Stadium – home of the Myrtle Beach Cubs – saw the hit parade start early and often with four Chargers having multi hit games. Caleb Moneyheffer (Warsaw High School) had a pair of hits and drove in the first run for the Chargers. Kainin Lewis (Male High School) remained red hot at the plate with two hits and one a double. Shay Hepler (Warsaw High School) had a pair of hits and RBI’s, Blake Bullock had a pair of singles and Francis Silfa (LaPorte High School) had three RBI’s.
Starter Luke Gaboury (Marian High School) took a no hitter into the fifth and ended the day with the win scattering two hits and striking out six. Evan Vangordon (Blackford High School) struck out three in two innings of relief.
Game two saw the Chargers jump out to a lead they would never relinquish behind a solid outing on the mound by freshman Dalton Clark (Rockville High School) who got his first college win tossing a complete game. Clark took a shut out into the sixth and ended the day with three strike outs scattering four hits.
Jason Ferguson (Warsaw High School) had a pair of hits. Alex Nelson (Ben Davis High School) also had a pair of hits and an RBI. Mike Spolyar (Lebanon High School) had a double for the Chargers.
The Chargers (2-4) take on Rochester Community College and Monroe Community College on Friday.
