buggy taxThe Marshall County Commissioners passed the Buggy Ordinance on second reading Monday.  The ordinance requires horse drawn buggies and wagons to be plated for use on Marshall County roadways.

The annual fee is $50 for each plate and a $3 processing fee for the collection agency, Lake City Bank for every plate sold.  The ordinance calls for the licensing to being January 1st 2016 with plates being available March first and due by May 31st.

During the public hearing on the ordinance there were no comments.  Commissioner Deb Griewank said she plans to send letters to the 12 to 15 Amish Bishops in the area allowing them to help promote the new ordinance since most Amish don’t listen to the radio or read the paper.

Commissioner Kurt Garner asked to delay action on the ordinance until the County Highway Department has their road plan in place.  He said, “Once it is in place we can tell those people purchasing the license, this is our plan for your money.”  He voted against the second reading although Commissioners Kevin Overmyer and Deb Griewank voted in favor.

Third reading will be in one of the December commissioner meetings and then once passed the ordinance must be posted in the legal ads of the newspaper prior to becoming affective.
