County News_logoThe new sheriff in town, Matt Hassel asked members of the Marshall County Council to consider creating a new line-item in the Sex Offender Registry fund that would allow for a part-time position to assume clerical duties, freeing up the detectives to handle more pressing issues.

Sheriff Hassel said he was “up-in-the-air” on the number of hours the position will require weekly but determined the need was there to have the position longer than a temporary position.  It was noted that state statue is very clear that fees collected from sex offenders can be used for personnel expenses.

The part-time position will be filled with a pat-time turnkey/dispatcher due to the fact they need access to IDACS, the Indiana Data and Communications System which is a computerized law enforcement and criminal justice communications and information storage and retrieval system. Sheriff Hassel noted, “The sex offender registry fund currently has a balance of $19,000.
