DONALDSON –Dr. Marcia Egan presented a lecture entitled “Looking Back, Stepping Forward: Angelina, Sarah and Social Justice” as a part of the college’s Lampen Lecture series Monday, March 16th.
Dr. Marcia Egan, resident of Maria Center, simply wanted to share her love of books and learning. Based on the book The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Dr. Egan painted a picture of North Carolina at the turn of the century as well as a peek into the lives of Angelina and Sarah Grimke, amazing activists of the day. The attendees were invited to “look back, step forward” as it related to glaring inequalities surrounding women’s rights and the issue of slavery.
“It is unbelievable,” said Sister Jolise May, vice-president of mission integration at Ancilla College, “that women, such as the Grimke sisters, Susan B. Anthony , Lucretia Mott and others were the ones who did the leg-work that passed the thirteenth Amendment and ended slavery in the United States. Their voices from the past call each of us to end the remnants of slavery that still exist in our society. They pass on their strength and courage of conviction to live our national declaration that ‘All men (women) are created equal.’ “
