County News_logoThe Marshall County Soil and Water Conservation District is in the process of preparing a Regional Wetland Program Development Grant.  During Monday’s Drainage Board meeting members considered writing a letter of support for the grant.

In a letter to the drainage board Tyson Edwards, Chairman of the Marshall County Soil and Water Conservation District indicated that each year in the United States there is a net loss of 27,000 acres of wetland. The loss is due to the conversion of wetlands to agricultural ground and land for development.

In order to get a clear picture of the status of the watershed of the headwaters of the Yellow River, Soil and Water needs to have a starting point.  The grant will allow for a landscape level assessment of the wetlands in the watershed.  Basically they will be able to identify current and historical wetlands and prioritize them for protection or restoration based on their function in the watershed.

The request was only for a letter of support and no financial obligation and the Marshall County Drainage Board approved writing a letter of support.
