BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN – After putting together a four game winning streak at the end of last week, the Ancilla College softball team has now lost three in a row after a double header sweep at the hands of Kellogg Community College 16-2 and 8-4.

The host Bruins remain in first place in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference, while Ancilla clings to fifth place in the nine team conference race.

Brooke Stout and Brittany Probasco had Ancilla’s only hits in the eight run rule shortened first game in which Kellogg scored in three of their four at bats after Ancilla opened up the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning.

Ancilla put together a four run second inning to take a 4-1 lead in game two. Tori Newsome led off the inning by reaching base on an error, moved to second one out later when Madyson Price was hit by a pitch. Allena McElfresh then loaded the bases with a single to left. Ali Cobb’s fielder’s choice scored Newsome and back-to-back RBI singles from Stout and Morgan Peoni completed the scoring for the Chargers. Peoni finished the game with two hits.

Kellogg answered with two runs in the second, four in the fourth, and one more in the sixth to preserve the victory.

“We were on the cusp,” said Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “Especially in the second game, it just seemed like we were one or two clutch hits away from getting the game tied to taking the lead.”

Ancilla (13-13, 6-7 MCCAA) returns home Thursday, April 16 to take on Muskegon Community College (24-10, 11-3 MCCAA), currently the second place team in the conference. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
