Dean Byers, Executive Director of the Habitat for Humanity and winner of the Sagamore of Wabash Award gave an informative review of The Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County at last month’s meeting if the Plymouth Lions Club.  Their Vision…a world where everyone has a decent place to live.  Their Mission Statement…Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.  Founded in Americus, Georgia in 1976, Habitat for Humanity today has helped build, renovate and repair more than 600,000 decent, affordable houses sheltering more than 3 million people worldwide.  They have more than 2million volunteers in 70 different countries.

Lion's Club Dean ByersThe Marshall County chapter of Habitat for Humanity was started in 1998 after the Habitat for Humanity approved the local affiliate on June 1, 1998.  The first partner home was completed in 1999 and to date 17 homes have been built which equals 1 million dollars in tax money for Marshall County.  Byers added the ReStore generates enough revenue to build a house each year.

The Mission of Habitat’s ReStore consists of three major points:

  1.  They seek to supply the community with low-cost home improvement materials
  2. They seek to keep reusable building materials from going to the landfill
  3. They seek to financially support Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County

The Habitat for Humanity is looking for building lots and would like to express that volunteers and donations are always welcomed and accepted.

The Plymouth Lions Club discussed upcoming events and fundraisers.  The Blueberry Festival will soon be here and The Lions Club will once again be selling pancakes and sausage Saturday thru Monday and sandwiches, delicious blueberry pie, pop, and water Friday thru Monday and hope all of Marshall County will make plans to attend.

The Plymouth Lions will be talking more about the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired along with Brian’s Trike Race, a fun-filled event hosted by the Indiana Lions to raise funds for the ISBVI at their August meeting.  Anyone who would like to become a member of the Plymouth Lions Club to help address the needs of our community should contact any Lions Club member.
