DONALDSON, INDIANA – After a three hour delay before starting the game, the Ancilla College softball team defeated MCCAA Co-Leader Lansing Community College 2-1 in 10 innings.
Ancilla’s Abbey Renner struck out nine, scattered four hits, and was 3-4 at the plate with an RBI to earn her ninth victory of the season. Kayla Smith was also 3-4 for the Chargers with a run scored.
Lansing’s Allie Grys allowed just eight hits and struck out five in the complete game effort.
Ancilla opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third. Smith started off the inning with a single but was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice bunt from Brooke Stout. Stout moved to third on a Renner double and scored on the same play on an eventual throwing error.
Lansing was held to two hits until the top of the seventh, when they tied up the score with a one out double from Cheyenne Wallace and RBI single off the bat of Neena Brockway.
Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the tenth. With one out Smith singled. One out later Renner doubled off the wall to center, scoring Smith on a close play at the plate.
“We fought hard today, played consistent defense, and Abbey had a great day in the circle,” said Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “I was happy with the eight hits we had in the game too and the way we battled in every at bat.”
Ancilla (10-10, 3-4 MCCAA) hosts Jackson College (7-16, 5-7 MCCAA) tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
