GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – Grand Rapids Community College swept the Ancilla College softball team by scores of 9-0 and 4-3.
In the opener, Morgan Peoni tallied Ancilla’s only hit in a game shortened to five innings by the eight run rule. Grand Rapids scored one in the first, three in the second, and five in the fourth to preserve the victory.

The Chargers jumped out to a lead in the second inning of the second game when Mariah Miller, Madyson Price, and Ali Cobb loaded the bases with consecutive walks. Peoni picked up an RBI in the next at bat with a fielder’s choice.

Ancilla added some insurance in the third. Abbey Renner led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Brittany Probasco single. A Kayte Miller ground out moved the runners to second and third and a Tori Newsome sacrifice fly scored Renner. Probasco scored one batter later on a Mariah Miller single, giving the Chargers a 3-0 lead.

Grand Rapids tied the game up with one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth, which eventually led to extra innings. The host Raiders scored an unearned in the bottom of the eighth to end the game and complete the sweep.
Renner struck out eight in 7 2/3 innings of work.

“We played well enough to win the second game but Grand Rapids just out-executed us,” said Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “It’s early in the season. We just have to bounce back next week.”

The Chargers (9-10, 2-4 MCCAA) host Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference co-leader Lansing Community College on Monday, hosts Jackson Community College on Tuesday, then hit the road for ThursdayFriday, and Saturday games on the road to end the week.
