DONALDSON – It was a cold day at Charger field Sunday made colder by Macomb Community College who pounded out 13 hits on their way to a five inning 11-0 game one win then came from behind late to hang on for a 6-5 win completing an opening day MCCAA sweep.

The Chargers could do little right in game one as starter Luke Gaboury (Mishawaka Marian High School) got two quick outs in the first only to see a hit batter and an error lead to three first inning runs. The Macomb offense would not let up from there scoring in every inning but the fifth when Brandon Kosloski (Elkhart Memorial High School) came on for a perfect inning of relief.

The Monarchs got a home run from Chase Schmittou in game one and starting pitcher Chad Skarjune took a no hitter into the third inning. Marvin Montgomery (Avon High School) had a double as part of just three game one hits by the Chargers.

Macomb jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in game two but the Chargers plated three in the third to take the lead behind a two run double from Kainin Lewis (Louisville Male High School). A single run in the sixth off reliever Evan Vangordan (Blackford High School) would prove to be the game winner.

Shay Hepler (Warsaw High School) had a double and an RBI for the Chargers. Francis Silfa (LaPorte High School) had a hit and RBI.

“Timely hitting, pitching and defense are what we stress and really we didn’t seem to be able to do any of those things today,” said Ancilla head coach Joe Yonto. “The teams in our conference are simply too good. You can’t give anybody, anything – a walk or an error – or they are going to make you pay for that. The scorebook for this one will bear that out.”

The Chargers (2-8) get no rest from tough tests. They take on perrennial MCCAA power Grand Rapids at Charger Field in a double header on Tuesday with a 2 p.m scheduled start time.
