Mooney's Ice Cream ParlorJon Webster from Mooney’s Ice Cream Parlor at 309 East Jefferson Street in Plymouth will have a couple of months to work with other tenants in his building to propose a new sign.

Webster put in a lighted sign without applying for a permit and placing a sign that is taller than standards, sits too close to the right-of-way and is the fourth sign on the building where only two are permitted.  During Tuesday night’s meeting Webster told the Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals he already had the sign up when Building Inspector Keith Hammonds told him it was in violation.

Hammonds said once he informed Webster of the violations he suggested he approach the BZA for a variance instead of requiring him to remove the sign.

Mooney's Ice Cream Parlor_2During the BZA meeting Michele Roberts, office manager for the building said she talked previously with the building inspector about improving the current sign and learned that it couldn’t be any higher and that a sign on the east end of the building was also in violation.  She supported Mr. Webster’s sign.

Alternate BZA member Greg Compton said he thought a new sign design that included all businesses in the building that may need a height variance would be a better idea.

The Plymouth BZA tabled any action on the violation or variance and gave Webster and Roberts until the April BZA meeting to present a new sign design and variance application if necessary or the lighted Ice Cream Parlor sign will have to be removed.
