Men and women gathered Friday evening to pay tribute to Brandie Peltz, the 11-year-old who was murdered in her Argos home almost 30 years ago.
People attending had a connection to Brandie, whether they went to school with her or were living in Argos when the incident happened.
The vigil wasn’t so much a call for police to do more, people say it was more to show that Brandie continues to be a big part of their lives.
“Really a horrible day,” former Argos police dispatcher Deirdre Albright said.
A handful of mourners say they’ll never forget December 11th, 1986.
One of Peltz’s friends was the last person to talk with her before the 11-year-old girl was murdered and left in her home which was set on fire.
“She said, ‘I know him’, is what she said,” Peltz’s friend said.
“We didn’t really know what to do. It was probably one of the first times that anything like that had happened in Argos,” Albright said.
Nearly 30 years later, Brandie’s family and friends have been waiting for a killer to be caught, and they’re still waiting.
“If they think they got away with this in this life, there’s a judgment day coming,” Brandie’s aunt Reva said.
“The hope is, with technology today, that something could be brought forth and take care of this matter,” Brandie’s uncle Dennis said.
As candles were lit and passed out Friday evening, Brandie’s friend shared some of her fondest memories, including letters and cards they exchanged. Those attending say after 29 years, they can’t forget a tragedy that shocked their tiny Indiana town.
“We all love Brandie and miss her dearly. She was the first grandchild in our family,” Dennis said.
People attending say they have suspicions about who killed Brandie, but the case remains cold, with no official suspect being named by Indiana State Police.
