IREAD-3Summer school remediation for Plymouth Community School Corporation third grade students who did not pass IREAD-3 and who did not qualify and receive a good cause waiver wrapped up on Friday June 19.

The two-week school began on June 8 and was held from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Jefferson Elementary School. The 26 students enrolled had the opportunity to re-test on the IREAD-3 at the end of the remediation program this past Wednesday and Thursday.

IREAD-3, which stands for Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination, is designed to measure foundational reading standards through third grade. The majority of the test is made up of literature and nonfiction reading comprehension questions, with about a quarter of the questions measuring vocabulary.

Jefferson Elementary School Principal Angie Mills said once it was determined this group of third grade students failed the IREAD test in the spring, each of the students spent anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes a day in reading remediation during the regular school day. She said the program extends for two weeks into the summer and then ends with a re-test.

Mills said two of the students enrolled this summer transferred in from the Knox area, two attend Jefferson during the school year and the rest of the students come from the other three PCSC elementary schools. She said PCSCS administrators would not find out how the students did on the re-test for close to two weeks.

The Indiana Department of Education website states, if a student does not pass the re-test and is not granted a good cause exemption, he or she must be retained in the third grade.

According to the IDOE website, the purpose of the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination (IREAD-3) assessment is to measure foundational reading standards through grade three. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with House Enrolled Act 1367 (also known as Public Law 109 in 2010), which “requires the evaluation of reading skills for students who are in grade three beginning in the Spring of 2012 to ensure that all students can read proficiently before moving on to grade four.”
