Lion Devon Stull explained the Kidsight program and how the children’s eyes are checked each year at last month’s meeting of the Plymouth Lion’s Club. It began in 2003 and 19,482 children were tested in the state last year. In 2005 the Lions Club purchased the Plus Optex Scanning Devise that gives actual refraction of children’s eyes….any child 6 months to 6 years old.
Operation KidSight is an Indiana Lions program to prevent problems from Amblopia (Lazy Eye) which if not corrected before the child’s eye is fully developed may never be completely corrected without surgery. The age will vary, but six is considered the outside age when the eye is considered fully developed. If found early enough, Amblopia may be corrected with eyeglasses. There is no charge for the screening program and the Lions will provide a child with glasses if the parents cannot afford the cost of glasses.
Plymouth Lions, in cooperation with all the Lions Clubs of Marshall County, work to screen every child in this county. Lions from Bremen, Argos, Bourbon, and Culver join in the screening process.
October 4th thru the 10th is the Worldwide Week of Service in Sight. This important week is to raise awareness about eye health, blindness and vision impairment. Vision screenings, provision of eyeglasses and assistive devices, and eye health education are topics of discussion and special awareness during this week with all Lions Club members around the world.
Upcoming events and fundraisers were also discussed and it was once again approved to distribute dictionaries to the third grade class students. It is estimated that 450 third graders will receive the dictionaries from the Plymouth Lions Club.
